Life As We Know It. end-of-year audio project
Editing/VFX/Foley Artist/Music Composer/Colour/Sound Mixing/Mastering
Tasked with the concept of creating a final audio project, the visual filmmaker in me immediately burst with ideas. However, though I knew I definitely wanted to create my own film to do the audio for (rather than source one pre-made as the sound peers of the past had done) I felt that the audio was more of a supporting role rather than the highlight: which was the requirement.
So, I decided to look at it in reverse. What if I told a story through its sound and had the visuals as the support instead?
This led me to explore the concept of ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response). I noticed how the goal of ASMR was to heighten or emphasise very specific sounds, often overlooked, so as to create an emotional response. From there it was just a matter of "which sounds"?
Over the course of my audio studies journey so far, my ability to tune into and take note of different frequencies and effects had significantly increased and I had already unknowingly been tuning into different frequencies at all times in my day. Being an outdoorsy/adventurous person, the sounds of life bustling in the windy mountain/sea region of my home city of Cape Town had inspired me greatly and as a conservation advocate, I thought this would be a fun, interesting and possibly even an effective way to bring awareness to the growing need for a conservation mindset when it comes to protecting the natural world.
I filmed where and whenever I had a moment to spare as I knew I needed as much time as I could get my hands on to record the audio in studio and still have time for post and to meet my deadline. 90% of the audio had to be recording as foley in the studio as it had to be as clean and clear as possible so as to create the ASMR effect.

Tik tok, instagram, facebook ... young people today are exposed to an infinite amount of ideas and imagery, causing mental overload. Pictures of beautiful countries and cultures, reels about new films and series, stories about their friends, acquaintances and colleagues, clips about breaking news and witty memes make the average young adult feel that there is so much to do and so little time and it's all out there, just out of reach.
I always see friends and colleagues yearning for simple pleasures, regretful of things they should have done when they had the time. We're all victim to our own insatiable desire for inspiration, knowledge, connection, without the mindset to take life as it comes because it's beauty is only so because it is finite. We each have our own lifespan, worries, fears, desires and pleasures and we're always convinced we're suffering life and we're suffering it alone. Always anxious about the next step or what's missing.
This film is a journey of existentialism which explores themes of depression and lack of self-fulfillment and identity by taking a look at the youth culture of today and their general mentality and how we can get help from even the most unexpected places if we just trusted, spoke up and shared.

Film is art...
That statement couldn't be more true!
Movies are such a major part of our lives, mine especially, and they are filled with major and minor breakthroughs alike.
I've always been fascinated with the subtle (and not-so-subtle) meanings and messages of films, almost like a treasure hunt.
The purpose of stories, of movies, is to connect. And how do we connect? Through discussion, through analysis, through storytelling.
I explore and analyse the plethora of movies and build a community of storytellers.
