Ellipsis

1.1 In parallel structures, repeated words or phrases can be omitted to avoid redundancy when their meaning is clear from the context. It is called ellipsis.


Examples

My parents expected me to go to college, but I didn’t want to. = (I didn’t want to go to college.)

We need money for the flight and to pay for the hotel. = (We need money for the flight and money to pay for the hotel.)

They walked into the room and then out again. = (They walked into the room and then out of the room again.)
